TERMS/FAQ

Safety First!

Lapidary is a rewarding and fun activity, but proper care must be taken to ensure it's done safely. All agates and jaspers contain crystalline silica, and some lapidary stones contain naturally occurring heavy metals or other minerals that can cause serious health issues. The process of cutting and polishing stones involves motorized equipment, sharp edges, oil mist, harmful dust, flying debris, etc. Please research the material and equipment you will be using and use safe work practices.

⚠️ CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 65 WARNING Some dust created by sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling, polishing and other lapidary activities may expose you to chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are naturally occurring minerals like crystalline silica (Quartz), Lead, Arsenic and Chromium from mineral inclusions, and Asbestos minerals like Chrysotile and Tremolite that may be present in tiger-eye, serpentinite and nephrite jade.

Stone Treatments

We specialize in rare and unique stones that are exceptional for their natural beauty. We only treat certain stones in order to improve their durability in cutting and wearing, In those cases, we use a product called Hxtal. Hxtal is a museum quality, water-clear epoxy that does not yellow like other common stabilizer products. Typically, it’s used on high-end material like gem dinosaur bone and native copper in agate. Nothing's worse than putting the final touches on a statement cabochon only to have a hidden fracture give way and ruin hours of work. We’ll note when slabs have been treated, and may be able to provide untreated slabs if you’d prefer. If it’s not noted, then the stone has not been treated.
